When asking foreigners like myself about the negative aspects of Barcelona, most will tell you “bad service”. Unfortunately, I completely agree but it does not have to be like that.
I love food and eating out but I can only truly enjoy my food when it is served with a genuine smile. Today I want to share my top 3 “food with a smile” brunch addresses.
I’ve been to all three places many times but I went to all of them again during the last week of my holiday to eat my favorite dishes and write this little review.
1. PICNIC – Carrer del Comerç 1, Barcelona
First thing I liked when entering PICNIC was the original, tasteful and cute decoration. It is very inviting and already makes you suspect that they have eye for detail. The first brunch dish I tried immediately became my all-time favorite: huevos rancheros. The dish is very varied, all ingredients taste exactly right and the presentation deserves 10 points. Really hungry? Try the quinoa hash-brown. They melt in your mouth. Oh, and another recommendation is the pink lemonade.
Everything in PICNIC always looks and tastes great & they are dog friendly. They always bring a bowl of water for our dog, Bertley.
2. BRUCH AND CAKE – Enric Granados 19, Barcelona
This place is pretty and pretty amazing. You always feel nice and zen after having brunch there. No matter how busy it gets (and it mostly does), they always serve you with a smile. My absolute favorite here has got to be the eggs Benedict served on a delicious waffle. You have got to taste it to believe how good it is. The sponge pancakes with fruit and chocolate are also very recommended.
If you want to have brunch in the weekend, better not go too late as you will have to wait for a table if you arrive after 11:00.
3. FEDERAL – Calle Parlament 39, Barcelona
For Barcelona standards, Federal is quite different and that is one of the things that makes Federal special, apart from the good service and great food and coffee.
The design of federal is impressive. Have a look at these pictures. It counts three floors and each floor has a very different look and feel. The ground floor looks a bit like a bakery with lots of wood, a cosy atmosphere and dominated by a big table that you share with other customers. Make sure to check out the cakes on the counter. The second floor is a bit more arty with cute benches on the side and last but not least there is a cosy terrace.
Food wise, everything I have tasted there is fresh and delicious. If you feel like having some scrambles eggs, be sure to order the English bacon as a supplement. You will lick your fingers.
As it is often the case with these little jewels, they get crowded at the weekend so if you want to have brunch, better not arrive too late. Ah and another plus is that dogs are allowed. What more could I wish for.
Happy brunch and enjoy your food with a smile
